Ski/Snowboard lessons in Nozawa Onsen

Learning to ski or snowboard can be really rewarding. It's kind of like learning to ride a bike… bit daunting to start with but once you’re away it's awesome.

Things to keep in mind

Learning to ski or snowboard has 3 main components;

  • Learners slope

  • Instructor

  • Attitude

LEARNERS SLOPE. Selecting the right place to learn is very important. Ideal is the ‘magic carpet’.

INSTRUCTOR. Instructors vary greatly in ability and process. Most likely your instructor will be accredited and thus will have the basic knowledge required to teach you. Instructors with experience have the added value of being able to see what works and doesn't over the years and then pass this across to you.

ATTITUDE. The frustration can be real. The key is to push past that and keep progressing. You will get there in the end. It won't happen immediately but it will happen. You might get a few aches and pains but it's all worth it in the end. Group or Private Lesson?

The main factor here is budget. You will get more out of a private lesson but on the other hand a group lesson, especially for first-timers, can be almost as effective. What can work well is a private AM lesson then heading off on your own for the afternoon to work on what was covered in the lesson.

Skiing or Snowboarding

Skiing is easier to learn than snowboarding. Skiing starts with learning how to stop/slow down with the ‘pizza wedge’. Once this is mastered it allows the student to basically go and stop at will. Snowboarding on the other hand requires a few more steps in order to go and stop at will. Once one has a decent hold on skiing, learning to snowboard becomes significantly easier. knowing how your base and edges react on snow is a transferable skill. Likewise learning to ski for those that can snowboard is also A LOT easier.
